Abandoned Gift Reminders are a great way to increase your donation conversions by reminding donors to complete their gifts. The reminder can be in the form of a popup message, an emailed reminder, or both.
This article will walk you through enabling Abandoned Gift Reminders for redesigned peer-to-peer donation forms, year-round donation forms using a landing page, and embedded year-round donation forms. We’ll also show you what your donors will see on each of these types of forms.

Abandoned Gift Reminders Overview
With the popup message enabled, donors who select a donation amount but then scroll away from or close your donation form will see a small popup nudge encouraging them to return to the donation form and submit their gift. The popup will continue to display if they return to the page within 48 hours of initiating their donation.
Please note: The popup message is not supported on forms with Giving Plans or Multi-Restriction Giving enabled. It is also not supported on text-to-donate forms or invoice fulfillment forms.
With emails enabled, donors who select a donation amount but then scroll away from or close your donation form will see an email collection modal, inviting them to provide their email address in order to receive reminders to complete their gifts.
Please note: The email reminder is not supported on text-to-donate forms or invoice fulfillment forms.
Peer-to-Peer Abandoned Gift Reminders
To activate Abandoned Gift Reminders for peer-to-peer forms, navigate to Donations within Donation Setup.
On the Donation Settings tab, scroll down to Additional Conversion Opportunities.
Then, toggle on Enable Abandoned Gift Reminders.
Use the checkboxes to enable the Popup Message, Automated Emails, or both.
Popup Message
If you select the Popup Message, you’ll see additional fields to customize the Message Text and Personalized Message Text.
Both fields include the %Amount% tag by default, which will populate with the donation amount the donor selected before abandoning the gift.
If the donor completed the First Name field on the Donor Details step before abandoning the gift, the Personalized Message Text will populate the donor’s first name, using the %DonorFirstName% tag.
If you decide to customize the text in these fields, we recommend you keep those tags in order to display that information to donors.
Automated Emails
If you select Automated Emails, the Abandoned Gift Reminder Email will become available in the System Emails Sent to Donors area of your System Emails page.
Navigate to System Emails and then select Edit next to the Abandoned Gift Reminder email in order to finish configuring your email reminders.
By default, the system will send one reminder email, one day after the gift was abandoned. You can schedule up to three emails by clicking the Add Email Reminder button.
Keep in mind that the timeframe you select in each drop-down reflects the number of hours or days after the initial gift was abandoned, not the time since the last email was sent.
Once you’ve determined how many emails you’d like to send and when to send them, you can customize the text of the email itself. Keep in mind that all reminder emails will include the same copy.
If you’d like to see an example of what Abandoned Gift Reminder emails look like, click the link above the Header field.
Please note: This is an example based on default settings. Your email will adopt your form’s theme color and font, and the copy will reflect what you’ve entered in the respective fields.
The example image also indicates where each field of the email editor appears in the donor-facing version.
The email contains a Contact Section by default. We recommend including this section with contact information to help answer donors' questions or address any issues they may have encountered. However, if you’d like to hide the contact section, click the checkbox.
Click Save to save your changes. If you would like to return the reminder to its default content and settings, including the default reminder schedule, click the Reset to Default link.
What Peer-to-Peer Donors See
When a supporter visits your peer-to-peer campaign site, they’ll first notice a message about cookies at the bottom of the screen. They can dismiss the banner, which will reappear the next time they visit the site. Or they can click Privacy Policy to read more about cookies and learn how to opt out.
To opt out of cookies, donors can click the automatic opt-out link in the Privacy Policy. Donors who choose to have cookies turned off, will no longer receive the Abandoned Gift Reminders, and the banner will disappear.
With the popup message enabled, if a donor opens the peer-to-peer donation form, selects an amount, and then closes the modal without submitting a gift, a popup will appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen with the selected amount included in the appeal.
Clicking Give now reopens with the donation form with the amount preselected. If the donor selected a donation recipient before closing the form, that will also populate when they reopen the form. If they had previously opted in to GiftAssist, that selection will also populate. Clicking Not today dismisses the reminder message until the next time the donor visits (or refreshes) the page.
Until the reminder has been dismissed or the donor has completed their gift, it will appear on each page of the peer-to-peer site. The reminder will continue to appear each time the donor visits the page for up to 48 hours.
With the reminder email enabled, if the donor selects an amount and then closes the donation form before completing their gift, a modal will appear, inviting them to enter their email to receive a reminder. If the donor has already entered an email address on the Donor Details step of the donation form, that address will be prefilled in the modal.
If both the popup message and the email reminder are enabled, the email collection modal will appear before the popup message does.
When a donor who has opted to receive an email reminder clicks the Give Now link in the email, they’ll be taken back to the donation form with the following information pre-populated, as long as they provided this information before their initial gift abandonment:
- Selected Gift, including, where applicable, donation amount, frequency, Giving Plan, start/end date, GiftAssist, and restrictions.
- Selected Recipient
- Donor Details, including First and Last Name, Company, Email, Address, Address2, City, State, Zip, and Phone.
The following information is not stored by the reminder system and will not be pre-populated, even if the donor provided this information before their initial gift abandonment:
- Custom field responses
- Dedication
- Matching Gift information
- Billing Address
- Payment Information
- Anonymous / Privacy field responses
- Legal field responses
Your campaign's theme font will be applied to the popup, the email modal, and the cookie banner, and the popup message and email modal will incorporate the campaign’s primary theme color.

Embedded Donation Form Abandoned Gift Reminders
You can enable and customize Abandoned Gift Reminders for embedded donation forms the same way you would for Year-Round Forms.
Once enabled, you’ll embed the form using a widget, if you haven’t already. Check out this article to read more about embedding your donation forms.
Then, you’ll need to add the cookie policy to your site.
Please note: Abandoned Gift Reminders are not compatible with sites built in Wix, GoDaddy Website Builder, or Google Sites. If your website is hosted by WordPress.com, you must have a plugin-enabled plan (Creator or Entrepreneur).
Adding the Cookie Policy for Embedded Forms
Please note: Qgiv embedded donation forms are considered a third-party service that generates optional cookies. Embedded donation forms do not automatically display the Cookie Policy that displays on peer-to-peer sites and donation form landing pages. It’s your responsibility as the site host to provide information about all cookies generated on your site and provide details about how users can opt out of optional cookies.
For instructions on how donors can opt out of optional Qgiv cookies, please refer to our Cookie Policy. To help you get an idea of language you may want to include in your Cookie Policy, we’ve provided an example below. This example will not apply to all environments and should be reviewed and adjusted to fit your site’s context prior to implementation:
“Qgiv is a third-party service that uses cookies and other tracking technologies to help enhance site navigation, analyze site usage, and assist in marketing efforts. No optional cookies are shared with third parties. If you would like to opt out of optional cookies you can find details of how to submit a verifiable consumer request in Qgiv’s Privacy Policy.”
From the Privacy Policy page, users can also click our automatic opt-out link to permanently opt out of Qgiv cookies.
