When you’re uploading an image to display in shared posts on Facebook, you’ll want to be sure it’s a rectangle and that it meets Facebook’s recommended size guidelines so it doesn’t get distorted when someone shares your Qgiv donation form or peer-to-peer event. Facebook recommends that you use images that are at least 1200px X 630px for the best display on high resolution devices.
What if your image is a square? Not a problem — you can easily turn it into a rectangle by using Pixlr Editor, which is an online editing tool (and it’s free!).
Changing the Image Dimensions
You can get started by visiting their homepage and choosing which editor you want to use. Because this is a simple resizing task, select Launch Pixlr X. Pixlr X is the express version for simple photo editing. Pixlr E is for more demanding photo editing.
Then select Open Image and choose the image from your computer.
Your image should now be displayed in the editor.
The trick here is that you won’t be resizing the image; you’ll be resizing the canvas on which the image sits. Click Layout & Template in the left-hand navigation bar.
Then choose Set Page Size.
In this step, we’re just turning the canvas into a rectangle, so the only thing you’ll change here is the width. We’ll worry about the size matching Facebook’s recommendations once we’ve turned the square logo into a rectangular one.
Change your width to be twice the amount of pixels as your height. Our image is 1650px high, so we’ll enter 2300 for the width. Next, select the center square as the anchor position. Click Apply when you’re done making adjustments.
Voila! Your logo is now a rectangle.
Saving the Image
To save your image, click the Save button in the bottom right corner.
In the resulting window, you can select the file type and adjust the image Quality.
When you click Save As, your file system will open. Choose where you’d like to save your new logo. It’s probably a good idea to add something like “Rectangle” to the end of your file name so you don’t save over the original. Then click Save.
Tada — you now have a rectangular image! But what if it’s too big (or too small)? You can quickly resize it using Pixlr!
Resizing the Image
To get started, work with the rectangular logo you just created, or one you already have in your files using the steps we previously outlined. From the options along the left side of the screen, choose Layout and Template, and then click the Resize page (scale) button.
Make sure the Constrain proportions toggle is on so the height will automatically change. In the Width box, enter 1200. As long as the size is close to Facebook’s recommendations, your image should show up just fine. You can tweak the numbers, if necessary. Ours is pretty close!
Once you click Apply, your newly resized image will be displayed! Follow the steps we went over earlier to save your image to your computer.
When you upload your image in the Share Your Form area of your form-level control panel for donation forms, or in Social Settings under Share Your Event for peer-to-peer events, it will be displayed in any posts made by a donor sharing your form or event.
That’s it! Now get back to being a super fundraiser!
